Daintree Red Dragon Fruit – Selenicereus sp.
Description:
Daintree Red is a beautifully coloured red-fleshed dragon fruit variety with red skin and deep red flesh. This variety is self-fertile, making it easy for home growers and orchard plantings to produce fruit without needing cross-pollination.
This plant was sourced from near the Daintree River in Far North Queensland, where it was found growing on an established star fruit and dragon fruit plantation. Interestingly, each star fruit tree on the property had a dragon fruit plant climbing up it, creating a productive mixed planting system.
The variety was originally imported by the previous owner of the property. The current owner, Nicholas, shared this plant with us after trialling many local dragon fruit varieties and finding that none were sweeter than this one.
