If you're planting a dragon fruit post, choosing the right combination of varieties can make all the difference.
At Rare Dragon Fruit, we always recommend planting 3–4 varieties per post. Why? Because even self-fertile varieties perform better with cross-pollination, giving you:
- More fruit set
- Bigger fruit
- Better flavour
- A longer harvest season
And let's be honest… if you're going to grow dragon fruit, you may as well grow a mix of colours, flavours, and harvest times 🌈
🌵 Why Choose Self-Fertile Varieties?
Self-fertile dragon fruit:
- Can set fruit on their own
- Still benefit from cross-pollination
- Are more reliable for backyard growers
- Perfect if you're just starting out
They're your "set and forget" backbone — then you can add more exotic types later.

These combinations focus on varieties we've found to be less sensitive to cooler weather, while still producing quality fruit.
