Palora Dragon Fruit

Palora Yellow Dragon Fruit – Selenicereus megalanthus

Description:
Palora Yellow Dragon Fruit is a well-known variety of the megalanthus species, prized for its sweetness and commercial production. It takes its name from the town of Palora in Ecuador, South America, where it is widely grown commercially.

This variety is a fast-growing yellow dragon fruit, although plants in the megalanthus group are generally a little slower growing compared to most red dragon fruit varieties. Palora produces beautiful bell-shaped yellow and white flowers and is self-fertile, making it easier for growers to produce fruit without needing cross-pollination.

The fruit is rounder than many other yellow megalanthus varieties, with yellow skin covered in small spines and white flesh inside. When the fruit is ripe, the spines can easily be brushed off with a small brush, revealing the smooth yellow skin underneath.

Palora is valued commercially for producing even-sized fruit on long branches. It tends to fruit in waves throughout the year, and the fruit takes longer to ripen than most dragon fruit varieties. In warm climates the fruit can ripen slowly over winter and continue producing through summer, making it a favourite with both growers and customers.

This variety has become especially popular in commercial production in China, due to its uniform fruit size, sweetness, and extended fruiting season.
