Sunflowers produce large open-faced flowers on long, sturdy stalks, featuring a ring of bright yellow daisy-like petals surrounding a contrasting brown centre filled with oil-rich seeds.
These cheerful flowers make a wonderful addition to vegetable gardens, orchards, and flower beds.
At Rare Dragon Fruit, we eat some of the seeds ourselves, and the spent flower heads are a favourite treat for our birds.

Sow seeds directly where they are to grow.
Firm the soil down gently after sowing, water lightly, and keep the soil moist during germination.
Choose a warm, sunny position with well-drained soil, preferably sheltered from strong winds.
Before planting, enrich the soil with Blood & Bone fertiliser.
Keep plants well watered and free from weeds while they establish.
Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
If cutting for arrangements, pick flowers before they become too mature for the best vase life.
