Pepita Edible Pumpkin Seed Grow your own

🌱 How to Grow Pepitas (Pumpkin Seeds) at Home 🌱

You’ve probably seen pepitas at the grocery store or sprinkled through granola. These tasty green seeds are actually the kernels of special pumpkin varieties—and while they can be pricey to buy, you can grow them yourself at home!

What Are Pepitas?

Unlike regular pumpkin seeds that have a hard white hull, pepitas come from “hull-less” pumpkin varieties. The green seed you see is the natural kernel—no shelling required.

How to Grow Pepitas

  1. Planting Time – Sow seeds in late spring to early summer when the soil has warmed to at least 18–20°C.

  2. Location – Full sun, in rich, well-drained soil. Add compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

  3. Spacing – Give them room! Plant seeds 1–2 m apart, as the vines sprawl.

  4. Watering – Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch helps retain moisture.

  5. Pollination – Pepita pumpkins need bees and pollinators. Plant flowers nearby to attract them.

  6. Harvesting – Pumpkins are ready when the rinds harden and vines begin to die back, usually in 90–110 days.

  7. Processing Seeds – Scoop seeds, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Store in an airtight container.
