Description

Macadamia integrifolia is an Australian native macadamia species originating from Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is a beautiful evergreen tree producing clusters of cream to pale pink flowers followed by the well-known hard-shelled macadamia nuts.

Macadamias can be grown across a range of Australian climates, particularly in warm, frost-protected positions. Established trees can reach approximately 5–10 metres tall, although regular pruning can keep them smaller and easier to harvest.

Trees grown from seed may begin producing nuts from around 5–7 years under good growing conditions; however, seed-grown trees can vary and may take longer.

Nut harvest is generally through autumn and winter, with mature nuts naturally falling from the tree when ready.

Taste

Macadamias are famous for their delicious rich, creamy and buttery flavour.

They are incredibly versatile and can be eaten fresh or roasted and used in pesto, muesli, baking, desserts, curries, salads, sauces and many other dishes.

Care

Position: Full sun is best, approximately 80–100% sunlight. Choose a well-drained position with protection from severe frost and strong winds while the tree is young.

Pruning: Macadamia trees can be maintained at a manageable height with regular pruning. Remove dead, damaged or unhealthy branches first, followed by branches growing inward or in unwanted directions. Regular light pruning is preferable to removing large branches later.

Fertilizing: Feed approximately twice a year, in spring and autumn, with a suitable balanced fertiliser and maintain organic matter around the root zone.

Water: Water regularly while establishing. Mature trees are more resilient, but consistent moisture during flowering and nut development can help support growth and production.

Please note: Trees grown from seed are genetically unique and may not produce nuts identical to the parent tree. Fruiting time, nut size, flavour and other characteristics can vary between seedlings.
