Sacred Lotus is a stunning aquatic flowering plant native to India, China, and Russia and now naturalised in many tropical and subtropical regions around the world.

This ancient plant is known for its large round leaves and beautiful flowers, often grown in ponds, water features, or large containers.

Sacred Lotus grows well in subtropical and tropical climates and can tolerate some cooler climates once established during the warmer months.

Growth

Nelumbo nucifera is a flowering perennial aquatic plant that grows in water and can reach up to 1.8 metres tall and 1.2 metres wide.

Although considered a subtropical plant, it naturally grows in diverse environments including:

• The Amur region of Russia

• The base of the Himalayas

• Altitudes up to 1,300 metres

For best germination and early growth, daytime temperatures should regularly reach around 25°C.

Lotus plants grow naturally in water up to 2.5 metres deep, but can grow in as little as 30cm of water.

They prefer loamy clay soil rich in nutrients and a full sun position.

How to Sprout Lotus Seeds

Step 1 – Check Seeds
Healthy lotus seeds are hard and dark brown or black. When placed in water they should sink. Discard seeds that float after 24 hours.

Step 2 – Scarify the Seed
Lotus seeds have a very hard shell. Use a nail file, sandpaper, or knife to gently file one end of the seed until the whitish inner layer appears. Do not damage the inner seed.

Step 3 – Soak the Seeds
Place the scarified seeds in a clear container with warm water (25–30°C).
The water level should be 2–3 times the height of the seeds.
Change the water daily and keep the container in a warm sunny position.

Step 4 – Sprouting
Seeds usually sprout within 3–14 days. A small green shoot will emerge from the scarified end.

Step 5 – Transplanting
Once the sprout reaches 10–15cm (4–6 inches) and small roots develop, transfer it to a pot or pond.

• Use a wide shallow pot with heavy garden soil or aquatic soil

• Avoid sandy or lightweight soil

• Gently press the sprout into the soil with the shoot above the surface

• Submerge the pot so the soil surface sits 5–10cm below the waterline
