Boesenbergia rotunda- Chinese Keys or Finger ginger

Other Names:

Finger Root, Temu Kunci (Indo), Krachai (Thai) 

Description:

  • A tropical perennial plant with thick fleshy rootlets is widely used in cooking in Thailand and Indonesia for its aromatic spicy flavour.
  • Grows to 60 to 90cm
  • Flowers during summer and in winter will lose all their foliage

Taste:

  • Can be eaten raw in salads, added to soups and curries, and made into pickles

Care Instructions: 

  • Likes a tropical or subtropical climate, or in cooler climates warm protected positions in a temperate climate. You could also keep it in a pot and bring it indoors in frost areas
  • Can be grown in full sun, but does better in semi-shaded 
  • Clumping
  • Moist well-drained soil
