Jack Fruit- Artocarpus heterophyllus

Jackfruit – Artocarpus heterophyllus

Description:
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a tropical fruit tree belonging to the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family (Moraceae). It is well suited to warm climates and is known for producing the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, with fruit sometimes reaching up to 35 kg.

The tree produces large fruit directly from the trunk and older branches, a growth habit known as cauliflory. All parts of the tree contain a milky, sticky latex, and the plant develops a deep taproot, helping it establish strongly in suitable soil conditions.

Jackfruit trees can grow 9–20 m tall, depending on climate and soil conditions, but they can easily be pruned to maintain a manageable height in home gardens or food forests.

Taste:
The ripe fruit has a sweet tropical flavour often described as a combination of apple, pineapple, mango, and banana.

Care:

  • Plant in full sun

  • Keep regularly watered, especially while establishing

  • Apply mulch and regular fertiliser for best growth

  • Prune annually to control height and encourage branching

Plant Size:
50 mm tube stock plant.
