Galangal Ginger Plant (Alpinia galanga)

Galangal – Alpinia galanga

Description

Galangal is a tropical edible rhizome closely related to ginger and widely used in Asian cooking.

It grows well as an understory plant in syntropic or food forest systems, and also works beautifully as a decorative ginger in semi-shaded gardens.

With its lush green foliage, galangal makes a productive and attractive addition to edible gardens and tropical landscapes.

Taste

Although related to ginger, galangal has a distinct flavour.

The rhizome is pink in colour and has a peppery citrus flavour. It can sometimes be slightly pithy, so it is best chopped finely or crushed when cooking.

Galangal is commonly used in soups, curries, stir-fries, and Southeast Asian dishes.

Care

  • Best grown as an understory plant where it is protected from full sun

  • Protect from frost and cold winds

  • Prefers tropical or subtropical climates, but can grow in warm temperate areas if sheltered

  • Likes moist soil but good drainage

The main issue that may occur is root rot if soil becomes too wet.
