Popcorn is different from sweet corn – it has smaller, harder kernels.
Soil Preparation
-
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
-
Work in compost or aged manure for fertility.
-
Popcorn prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6–7).
Sowing Seeds
-
Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep.
-
Space 20–25 cm apart in rows, with rows 60–90 cm apart.
-
Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows rather than a single row (for proper wind pollination).
Watering & Care
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and kernel formation.
-
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
-
Fertilize with a nitrogen boost (like compost tea or organic fertilizer) when plants are knee-high.
Pollination
-
Popcorn is wind-pollinated. Planting in blocks helps ensure full kernel development.
-
Avoid planting sweet corn nearby, as cross-pollination can ruin flavor and texture.
Harvesting
-
Leave ears on the stalk until the husks are dry and brown.
-
Kernels should be hard and glossy.
-
Pick ears, then allow them to cure for 3–4 weeks in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place.
Shelling & Storing
-
Once dry, remove kernels from cobs by twisting or rubbing.
-
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
-
If kernels are too dry to pop well, add a teaspoon of water per cup of kernels, shake well, and let rest for a few days to rebalance moisture.
