Asunta 1 Dragon Fruit Hybrid

Asunta 1 Dragon Fruit

First Hybrid in the Asunta Series

New variety 2023 — first buds observed in December 2024.

created by Edgar Valdivia, a member of the California Rare Fruit Growers organization.

We believe this isn't the True Asunta 1 as evidence sources shows images with fruit having white flesh where our has produced pink. This is still an amazing fruit and this is why we have called it Asunta 1 hybrid.

This variety is the result of a cross between Hylocereus stenopterus × Hylocereus guatemalensis.

Early fruit from this selection was smaller than others in the series. To improve fruit size, Edgar Valdivia intentionally used the large-fruiting Condor variety as a pollination partner in further breeding work.

Flower & Growth Characteristics

  • Flower colour: Pink

  • Pollination: Self-sterile — requires cross-pollination recommend growing Tropical Pink or Pink panther dragon fruit they produce flowers around the same time.

  • Pollination note: Flowers need to be manually opened for effective pollination

  • Growth note: Can be sensitive to rot during seasonal transitions. but produces good growth in the growing season so this counteracts any problems it gets in winter.

  • I would suggest growing tin tropical to subtropical regions. I don't feel it would deal with the cold and frost regions.
