How to Attach a Galvanized Dragon Fruit Trellis Top
A strong trellis is one of the most important parts of setting up a dragon fruit plant. As the plant matures, the branches grow up the post and then cascade over the top, creating the canopy where much of your flowering and fruit production will occur.
OurGalvanized Dragon Fruit Trellis Tops are designed to provide a simple, strong and long-lasting support for this canopy.
Install Your Trellis Top Early
One of our biggest tips is:
Install your trellis top before your dragon fruit gets too tall!
It is much easier to position and securely attach the topper while the plant is still growing up the post.
If you already have established plants, don't worry. The topper can still be retrofitted — you may just need to carefully move the branches out of the way while installing it.

What Posts Can You Use?
One of the advantages of this trellis top is its versatility.
It can be installed on:
- Timber posts
- Concrete posts
- Aluminium posts
- PVC posts
- Steel posts
This makes it suitable for everything from a single backyard dragon fruit plant through to larger orchard and commercial growing systems.
Positioning the Trellis Top
Place the trellis top over the centre of your post and check that it is sitting level.
The topper measures approximately50 cm × 50 cm, providing plenty of room for the dragon fruit branches to spread before cascading over the outside of the frame.
Once you are happy with the position, secure it firmly to the post.
Option 1 – Galvanised Steel Strapping
This is one of the easiest ways to attach the topper, particularly when working with timber or concrete posts.
We havepre-drilled 20 cm galvanised steel straps available specifically for attaching the trellis tops.
Position the straps across the metal frame and secure them firmly to your post.
We recommend screwing the straps into timber rather than nailing them.
Screws provide a strong attachment while also making it much easier to remove, adjust or replace the trellis top later if required.

Option 2 – U-Shaped Fencing Staples
For timber posts, another simple option is to useU-shaped fencing staples over the metal frame.
These can hold the trellis top securely against the timber.
However, where possible, we prefer a screwed attachment using galvanised strapping because it makes future maintenance and adjustment easier.
Concrete, PVC and Aluminium Posts
The exact fixing method can be adapted to the type of post you are using.
For posts where you don't want to screw directly into the material, the topper can be secured using suitable galvanised strapping, brackets or other exterior-rated fixings.
The important thing is that the topper is:
centred, level and firmly secured.
Remember that a mature dragon fruit plant can develop a surprisingly large and heavy canopy, particularly when it is carrying fruit.
Train Your Dragon Fruit Through the Top
Once your topper is installed, continue training the main dragon fruit branches vertically up the post.
When they reach the top, allow them to grow through and over the trellis frame.
You can loosely guide young growth into position if required, but avoid tying stems too tightly. Dragon fruit stems become considerably thicker as they mature.
Once the branches reach the outside of the topper, allow them to hang down naturally. This creates the classic umbrella-style dragon fruit canopy.
