Description:
Turmeric – Curcuma longa
A beautiful tropical herb with lush green foliage that gives any garden a stunning tropical look. During the growing season it produces striking flowers that bees absolutely love.
Turmeric is deciduous, meaning it goes dormant in winter and re-shoots again when the weather warms.
This hardy plant is quite cold tolerant and grows well in many parts of Australia.
Best grown in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Growing in Pots
Turmeric grows very well in containers.
Choose a large pot, as this vigorous herb can easily grow over 1 metre tall.
The pot should be at least 12 inches deep and 12–18 inches wide so the plant has plenty of space to spread its rhizomes.
Plant 1–2 rhizomes per pot.
Harvesting
Turmeric takes 8–10 months to mature.
Harvest when the leaves begin to yellow and the stems start to dry back.
To harvest, simply dig up the entire plant including the roots. Cut off the amount you need and replant the remaining rhizome to grow another plant.
Roots are typically harvested in Autumn or Winter.
Taste
Earthy with a mild bitterness and a hint of spice.
The roots are commonly dried and ground into turmeric powder.
Care
Prefers well-draining soil and a warm sunny position in the garden.
Plant Sizes
50mm tub plant
or
Approx. 250g turmeric rhizome

Seasonal Notes
In winter you will receive rhizomes only, as turmeric naturally dies back during the colder months. New growth will appear once the weather warms.
During summer, leaves may be trimmed to fit into the shipping box.
Leaves may appear slightly wilted on arrival, but turmeric grows from the root system, so this will not affect the plant’s future growth.
