Diggers Red Magenta Dragon Fruit - Hylocereus lemairei

Magenta Dragon Fruit – Seed Grown Selection

Description

A bright magenta-fleshed dragon fruit selection grown from seed originally sourced from The Diggers Club. Because these plants were grown from seed, each plant has developed slightly differently, creating unique individuals.

To observe these differences, each plant will be numbered and tracked as it grows and fruits.

Dragon fruit are climbing epiphytic cacti that thrive in warm climates. The fruit is visually striking, with curling scales and vibrant flesh that almost looks like confectionery.

  • Magenta-coloured flesh

  • Climbing cactus growth habit

  • Best suited to warm climates

  • Flowers are nocturnal, opening for one night during the warmer months

This plant flowered approximately 4 years after planting, which is typical for seed-grown dragon fruit.

How to Grow

Dragon fruit plants grow as vine-like epiphytic cacti and prefer:

  • Warm climates

  • Well-drained soil enriched with organic matter

  • Full sun in cooler climates, or protection from harsh afternoon sun in very hot regions

Plants can be grown:

  • Directly in the ground

  • In large containers

  • In hanging baskets

Train stems onto a post, trellis, or frame so the branches can grow upward and then cascade over the top, which encourages flowering and fruiting.

Flowers appear in summer and bloom at night, lasting only one evening. Hand pollination can improve fruit set by transferring pollen from the anther to the stigma using a small brush.

Regular watering is recommended during the growing season, with reduced watering during winter. Apply compost in spring and fertilise with a balanced fertiliser in spring and autumn.

In cooler regions, plants can benefit from growing against a north-facing wall or in a greenhouse for additional warmth.
