Finger Root, Temu Kunci (Indo), Krachai (Thai)
A tropical perennial plant with thick fleshy rootlets is widely used in cooking in Thailand and Indonesia for its aromatic spicy flavour.
Grows to 60 to 90cm
Flowers during summer and in winter will lose all their foliage
Can be eaten raw in salads, added to soups and curries, and made into pickles
Likes a tropical or subtropical climate, or in cooler climates warm protected positions in a temperate climate. You could also keep it in a pot and bring it indoors in frost areas
Can be grown in full sun, but does better in semi-shaded
Moist well-drained soil
