Shampoo Ginger – Zingiber zerumbet

Shampoo Ginger – Zingiber zerumbet

Description

Zingiber zerumbet, commonly known as Shampoo Ginger, is a beautiful tropical plant that grows well as an understory planting in food forests and tropical gardens, or as an attractive potted specimen.

During summer, the plant produces a basal green cone with creamy white flowers emerging from the cone. As the bloom matures, the cone gradually turns a vibrant red, creating a striking ornamental feature.

The plant is widely known as Shampoo Ginger because the cone contains a fragrant milky liquid that has traditionally been used in many South East Asian cultures as a natural shampoo and hair conditioner.

The rhizomes (roots) are also valued in traditional herbal medicine and are often ground and used for a variety of ailments.

This plant is deciduous and will naturally die back during cooler months before regrowing in the warmer season.
