Purple 8 is a high-quality dragon fruit variety offering excellent size, great flavour, and strong commercial value. Originally sourced from material originating in the Philippines and further developed in Carson City, USA, this variety has proven well suited to Australian growing conditions.
The plant is reasonably fast growing and produces fruit with a red skin and contrasting green fins. The skin thickness of approximately 6 mm provides good protection for handling and transport, while the deep purple flesh delivers strong visual appeal.
Purple 8 has produced medium-sized fruit averaging around 600 g, placing it in a desirable size range for both fresh market sales and home growers. This variety is self-sterile, requiring cross-pollination for reliable fruit set, and produces classic large white night-blooming flowers.
This variety was sourced from a Queensland farm and continues to show improvement as plants mature.
