Meet the Farmers – Yana & Michael

Rare Dragon Fruit is a family-run dragon fruit farm in Agnes Water, Queensland, created by Yana and Michael with a passion for growing rare and unusual fruit.

What started as a small backyard experiment has grown into a thriving collection of over 150 varieties of dragon fruit, making Rare Dragon Fruit one of the most diverse collections in Australia.

Together, Yana and Michael focus on growing dragon fruit using sustainable and regenerative farming practices, working with nature rather than against it. Their orchard is designed as a polyculture food forest, where dragon fruit grows alongside bananas, herbs, flowers, and companion plants that support soil health and biodiversity.

Family life at the farm

In our spare time we love travelling and exploring new places. Mick especially enjoys surfing and fishing whenever he gets the chance. Running a small family farm allows us to keep a healthy work–family balance, giving us the flexibility to enjoy what we do while still being there for our kids whenever they need us.

Beyond growing fruit, they are passionate about sharing knowledge with the community. Rare Dragon Fruit regularly hosts:

  • Dragon fruit growing workshops
  • School visits and educational tours
  • Community garden collaborations
  • Hands-on farm experiences

Through experimentation, research, and years of growing experience, Yana and Michael continue to explore new varieties, improve growing techniques, and share what they learn with growers across Australia.

Their goal is simple:

To make growing dragon fruit accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable for everyone.

Community involvement

Yana and Michael are also actively involved in local community projects.

They help support community gardens, including the Village Garden run by Chappy House, and regularly attend produce swaps at Captain Creek, sharing plants, seeds, and knowledge with the local community.
