Kangaroos and Dragon Fruit: Living in Harmony on the Farm

One of the most common questions we get asked is whether kangaroos cause problems with our dragon fruit — and the answer might surprise you!

We’ve found that kangaroos and dragon fruit live together beautifully. While many of our fruits hang right at “kangaroo height,” perfectly presented as if on a platter, the roos aren’t interested in eating them. Instead, during the drier months, they focus on trimming the long, juicy grass that surrounds our rows — saving us a bit of mowing!

The only minor challenge we’ve had is with young sunflower companion plants, which they find a little too tempting. But we can forgive them for that.

Kangaroos also love to rest in our warm mulch piles, soaking up the heat while keeping us entertained with their gentle presence. Beyond their charm, they play an important role in our farm’s ecosystem — turning grass into natural manure and returning valuable nutrients and beneficial bacteria back into the soil.

We truly appreciate sharing our space with these iconic Australians. They’re part of the landscape, part of the rhythm of the farm, and a reminder that harmony with nature makes everything grow better. 🌱💚
